Research
As a big fan of the LOTR books and films I wanted to create this map to reflect one of the lesser known places in the world. I researched several locations, various building diagrams and designs and finally found Bag End whose base design I could interpret into a (mostly) symmetrical Capture the Flag map.
Design
Using lore documentation and illustrations of what Bag End would look like if it were real I co-opted pieces and the general shape to form one half of my map, from there
I mirrored and added in central rooms to break up the even flow and give more variation for play.
Playtest
Two stages of playtesting occurred for this map. The first was to test general flow states and balancing for the maps initial design.
The second was to determine if the map met the needs of the game and if players could tell that it related to the series selected.
Revise
With each playtest feedback was gathered both live and in survey form. This feedback was compiled to help pick out pain points of the map and filter needs versus wants.
This map underwent two revision stages after each playtest to improve and adjust the design for a better play space and balanced environment.
Blueprints
When designing the blueprint for this map it was important to keep it mostly symmetrical to best accommodate the playstyle in Capture the Flag. Having home base mirrored for each team allowed a fair advantage for either side to get the others flag. The central shared zone allows for variety and a 'break up' of shapes in the map layout.
